ONE DAY WORKSHOP: Sunday, March 25, 2012     10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Learn about taiko history, notation, and basic rhythms at this one-day, hands-on workshop. At the end of the workshop, participants will have learned a taiko piece. No previous experience is necessary.

Venue: Taiko Space, 1254 Frances Street, Vancouver (just west of Clark Drive)
Fee: $75 general or $50 for students/ seniors/ unemployed.

Participants must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, and bring a lunch. Bring soft-soled indoor athletic footwear, or be prepared
to go barefoot – street shoes cannot be worn inside the taiko space. Coffee, tea and juice will be provided.

With arms and hips swinging, Katari Taiko and guest percussionist Mario Zetina will present new work and fresh arrangements combining Latin American music and rhythms with the beat of the taiko at the 2010 Powell Street Festival.  With taiko, congas and voice, Katari Taiko and Zetina will create a commotion with Ja Sawago, wake the lion with Shi Shi Mai, get the blood flowing with a merengue-taiko concoction and celebrate this fabulous union with Matsuri .

Katari Taiko 2010 Classes

An eight-week course featuring hands on taiko workshops and the history of taiko in the Japanese Canadian community

Monday evenings

March 1 to 29 + April 12, 19 + 26, 2010

7:00 pm – 10:00 pm (3 hours)

Classes will be held March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 12, 19 and 26.

Fee: $275; maximum 10 participants

Registering: Please contact Koralee at koralee@dkam.ca if you would like to reserve a space in the class and you will be sent a registration form.

Goals: To learn fundamental taiko drumming techniques and rhythms and to explore the context of taiko as a performing art within the Japanese Canadian community. No previous experience is necessary.

Objectives: During and upon completion of this course students will:

  • Understand the cultural and historical significance of taiko within the Japanese Canadian community;
  • Use proper stance and positioning to play taiko on side stands;
  • Play basic taiko hits and rhythms;
  • Learn two songs;
  • Use kiai (shouts) to support their drumming;
  • Practice basic care and maintenance of drums and other equipment.

Format: Each class will begin with 30 minutes of stretching, strengthening, and vocal exercises. This will be followed by 90-120 minutes of drumming, including a cool down at the end. At first, the students will focus on basic technique and drills. Towards the second half of the course, the students will learn to perform two songs in simple arrangements. The students will spend the final 20-30 minutes of each class discussing a topic related to the history and culture of taiko in the Japanese Canadian community.

Instruction: The course will be taught by members of Katari Taiko.
